A minute for Madeleine

This week the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre released a new film aimed at anyone close to the person who was involved in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

In order to reach that person, CEOP are asking for the public’s help to share this message virally, via the internet, so that the message is so widespread that it becomes one click away to the person who knows something about Madeleine’s disappearance.

If you are online and part of an online community, you can help by:
- Posting the link on your social networking site
- Emailing your friends and colleagues and encouraging them to share the film
- Blogging and/or Tweeting about the film

The two people below are still of interest to the inquiry. Do you know them??

Don't give up on me

Message from Madeleine's parents (taken from the findmadeleine website).

It is now more than two years since Madeleine was taken from us – more than two years since we saw and held our beautiful daughter, since Sean and Amelie played with their big sister, since we were a happy family of five. Without doubt, two years seems a huge proportion of your life when you’re six years old, but in reality it is just a tiny fraction of the life which lies ahead of you. It is important for us to keep looking forward.

Whilst the fact that Madeleine is still missing remains our greatest anxiety, it is important to remember that the person who took Madeleine remains free. Other children could be at risk from this person too if we do not continue with our investigation, or if the people who know or suspect something remain silent. There is no law enforcement agency actively looking for Madeleine or the person who took her. As such, Madeleine and possibly other children are dependent on good and moral ‘everyday’ people to help them. We kindly ask you to share this responsibility with us.

Why do we continue?
-There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Madeleine has been harmed.
-Madeleine is still missing and someone needs to be looking for her.
-She is very young and vulnerable and needs our help.
-We love her dearly and miss her beyond words.

We must continue and never give up on Madeleine.Thank you so much for your continued help, support and information. You have helped to sustain us as a family and continue to increase our chances of finding Madeleine.

DNA test on new suspect Raymond Hewlett

WANTED paedophile Raymond Hewlett is to undergo a DNA test to establish whether he was involved in the kidnapping of Madeleine McCann.
The 64-year-old convicted child rapist was living near the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz when Maddie vanished two years ago.

Detectives working for Maddie's parents Kate and Gerry are due to arrive today in Aachen, Germany, where cancer-stricken Hewlett is in hospital.
The ex-cops have no formal powers to make Hewlett co-operate, and are relying on him talking voluntarily.

But a spokesman for Aachen police last night confirmed the public prosecutor will make the decision to give Hewlett a DNA test in the next few days.

DNA samples taken from the McCanns' holiday apartment include several that have never been matched to anyone.

Kate and Gerry's official spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Mr Hewlett has denied any involvement in Madeleine's abduction.
"Our investigators hope he will co-operate by giving them whatever information is needed so they can eliminate him from the investigation.

Detective hunting for Madeleine believes she is alive

A former policeman working on the hunt for Madeleine McCann says he believes she is alive, being cared for by people who love her.
David Edgar, 52, was quoted in the Daily Mirror saying that he thinks she was snatched by someone who wanted a child to live and that Madeleine was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Madeleine disappeared from her family's holiday apartment at Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007 just before she turned four, and Mr Edgar says other theories can be dismissed. He said most children taken and killed by paedophiles are dumped close by, and in any case no clothing has so far been found. Mr Edgar also said that, if child traffickers had taken her, by now the huge reward would have encouraged one of the traffickers to break ranks.
With no new information in the case, a war of words is heating up between parents Gerry and Kate and Goncalo Amaral, the Portuguese detective they are suing for defamation. Today, Amaral has said he will counter-sue the McCanns and other people for defamation.
Madeleine's parents said: "We can no longer stand back and watch as Mr Amaral tries to convince the entire world that Madeleine is dead."

Detectives probe 18 known perverts in search for Madeleine

DETECTIVES hunting for Madeleine McCann are studying a list of 18 perverts and six sex attacks on kids in the area where she vanished.

Ex-cops hired by parents Kate and Gerry also have details of five new suspects following last week's publicity on the second anniversary of her disappearance.

Former detective inspector Dave Edgar, 52, believes she is still alive.
He thinks she could be living in a Portuguese village just 15 miles from the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz, where she was last seen in May 2007.
He said: "There is a very strong possibility Madeleine is still within that area. We are following evidence with this."

His team have been sifting through up to 300 calls after a TV reconstruction last week and the release of a sketch of a man seen watching the McCann's holiday flat.
They are cross-checking a database of sex offenders in Portugal at the time, including 18 living within an hour of the McCanns' holiday flat.
He said: "There are five or six we are focusing in on. We have names for some."

Edgar is looking at records of six sex attacks on children in the Algarve in the three years before Madeleine's disappearance.
He said: "Most were overnight, in apartments, and at least five involved British children."
Edgar says it is more than likely Portuguese cops had the kidnapper in their grasp but let him go.

Televised reconstruction

On May 7th at 9pm (UK time), a televised ‘reconstruction’ of potentially significant and suspicious events from around the time that Madeleine was taken will be aired on Channel 4 in Britain. Much of this information has not been disclosed to the general public before and it is apparent that there are several highly important unanswered questions remaining. Just one of these answers could provide us with that vital piece of information that leads us to Madeleine. It is our hope that these reconstructed scenes will trigger somebody’s memory and prompt them to come forward – giving us the key piece of the jigsaw that we - and Madeleine especially -so desperately need.

New suspect?

Did this man take Madeleine? New prime suspect is prowler seen outside the McCanns' apartment.
A prowler spotted outside Madeleine McCann's holiday apartment was yesterday revealed as a new prime suspect in the hunt for the missing girl.

The heavily scarred stranger was seen five times in the four days before the three-year-old disappeared, prompting fears he could have been watching the McCann family.

Although he was seen by four witnesses, each of whom gave statements to Portuguese police, astonishingly it has taken almost two years for their accounts to be linked.
The suspect is one of a series of developments which have given Kate and Gerry McCann fresh hope that they could finally be closer to finding their daughter.

30 new sightings after Oprah

Private investigators are looking into 30 new reported sightings of Madeleine McCann.

The calls came after her parents appeared on Oprah Winfrey's talk show to mark the two year anniversary of her disappearance.

There have also been thousands of new hits on the Find Madeleine Website.

"All of the calls are being checked out and where there is a shred of hope they are being investigated," said McCann spokesman, Clarence Mitchell.

Two former British detectives are now working for the campaign and will be handling the new information.

It's thought the potential sightings were made in North and South America as well as a handful in Europe.

New photographic image of Madeleine released

A striking image of how Madeleine McCann might look now, if still alive, has been released by her parents.

The picture was sent out ahead of the second anniversary of her disappearance.
Gerry and Kate McCann employed a forensic imaging artist to produce a photographic impression of how the youngster would have aged in the two years since she went missing.

The couple believe it is the most realistic image possible of how she might look today, said their spokesman Clarence Mitchell.

"It was difficult for Kate to see the image at first, but over time she has got used to it".

"They feel it's important that as many people as possible see Madeleine as she now is, rather than the child of three seen in all of those early photographs," he said.

"This is the child that somebody who is close to Madeleine may spot, rather than the child in those other photos, and Kate and Gerry are incredibly hopeful that this will lead to the phone call that finds Madeleine and brings her home.

It will be used on posters to be distributed worldwide, as part of the couple's continuing search for their little girl.

Unveiled on Oprah Winfrey's live chat show in the United States, the image depicts the child at six years of age. The show will be screened here in the UK this Tuesday.

Portugal

THANK YOU & SORRY

Breaking a silence lasting several months, the father of missing toddler Madeleine McCann this week spoke exclusively to The Portugal News about the ongoing search to find his daughter. He also spoke of the effects Madeleine’s disappearance has had on his family. Gerry McCann singled out the local community for praise and expressed appreciation for all the sacrifices they have been forced to endure the past two years, such as the negative impact the case has had on jobs and tourism in the area. He also admitted that cash in the Find Madeleine Fund is now only a few months away from being exhausted.

Shortly before leaving for Faro Airport on Sunday afternoon culminating what had been a whirlwind visit to Praia da Luz, Gerry McCann sat down in a Praia da Luz hotel room for his first media interview in months.

“I can totally understand that people want to move on”, said Mr McCann when questioned over the apparent animosity towards him on Saturday when he visited the site of his daughter’s disappearance.

“They don’t want the media intrusion and the negative association with Madeleine’s abduction. For me, and this is going right back to 2007 – I didn’t feel any evil around Praia da Luz or anywhere else in Portugal. What happened here could have happened anywhere in the world”, argued a composed and soft-spoken Mr McCann.

“Actually, the amazing response we had from the community was incredibly important to us”, he said.

As for the heckling by a small group of middle-aged locals who had been monitoring filming closely since Saturday morning, Mr McCann said: “That aspect was everything I had hoped could be avoided”, by keeping the visit under wraps.

He had demanded the utmost secrecy from all those involved in the weeks leading up to the filming of the television documentary by Mentorn Media for the May 7th showing of the programme Cutting Edge on Channel 4.

He repeatedly expressed regret at the negative impact his daughter’s disappearance has had on the region.

“I am sorry for any harm caused to Praia da Luz”, he said, before repeating an earlier request: “I specifically want to thank the local population for all their support and tolerance.”

Latest Press Release - www.findmadeleine.com

On the 3rd May 2007, 3 yr old Madeleine McCann was abducted from the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz, since then, despite extensive enquiries Madeleine is still missing.

It is almost two years since Madeleine McCann disappeared and there is good reason to believe that she is still alive. Madeleine’s family and friends will never give up hope.

At the time of Madeleine’s disappearance the emphasis was placed more on international appeals and it has been recognised that the local Portuguese residents of Praia da Luz and the surrounding areas have never been properly asked about information they may have to give.

The purpose of the current campaign is to do just that; ask the local Portuguese residents for information to help to find Madeleine.

Experience shows that the crucial answers are in the immediate vicinity, someone in the area could almost certainly have the vital information that could help Madeleine’s return to her family, or a combination of people all coming forward with a single piece of information could piece together vital clues which could solve the disappearance.

Experience also shows that people almost always confide in someone else. Someone in Praia da Luz may have been given information that should be passed on and now is the perfect opportunity to do just that, if anyone has information of any kind, do the right thing and pass it on so that Madeleine McCann can go home.

The campaign is about finding Madeleine. Her family hope and believe that local residents can be a very real help. It goes without saying that they would forever be indebted to anyone who had that vital piece of information.

Over the next couple of weeks in the Lagos and Luz areas residents will see posters, billboards and advertisements, leaflets will be distributed in towns and local markets and there will also be a mailing sent to local homes appealing for help.

It should be stressed that any information given will be treated with the utmost confidence. Information can be given anonymously by telephone, email, text and freepost.

Private detectives expose paedophile network

Detectives hunting for Madeleine McCann have exposed a child pornography ring in Spain, leading to 13 arrests.

The network was discovered by Metedo 3, a private detective agency based in Barcelona hired by Gerry and Kate McCann to help find Madeleine after she disappeared.
However it has not provided any fresh leads on the fate of the missing girl.

Nine months after Madeleine was snatched from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, the agency received an anonymous email saying the toddler appeared in a pornographic video being distributed on the Internet. The team, lead by agency director Francisco Marco, traced the images and discovered Madeleine did not appear in them.
They reported their findings to Spain's National Police, who launched an operation to hunt down the paedophiles distributing the videos.

Armed police launched a series of raids across Spain last month and arrested 13 people. Ten more are being formally investigated by a judge at a Barcelona court, which is overseeing the police operation.

Sources said the video showed dozens of young children, mostly girls, being sexually abused. The paedophiles were allowing other Internet users around the globe access to the videos.
Mr Marco said: "In the video all the victims are under ten years old. I am satisfied to have taken out of circulation more than 20 paedophiles, and those who will be arrested in the future."

The agency chief was criticised after boasting in November 2007 that he would find the missing youngster before the firm's six month contract expired.
And the following month he claimed he knew who kidnapped Madeleine - and hoped to reunite her with her parents for Christmas.

Mr and Mrs McCann have hired a new team of 12 retired British detectives, MI5 and MI6 officers. They will use information contained in Portuguese police files, which were released last summer after the couple were cleared of being suspects.

How the British Press set out to systematically destroy the parents of Madeleine McCann

BRIAN CATHCART DETAILS HERE HOW THE BRITISH PRESS SET OUT TO SYSTEMATICALLY DESTROY THE PARENTS OF MADELEINE McCANN.

You may have missed it: at the High Court in London on 15 October, Express Newspapers agreed to pay £375,000 in libel damages to the so-called "Tapas Seven", the friends of Kate and Gerry McCann who were with the couple in Portugal when Madeleine McCann disappeared.
This development did not receive much coverage. There were three sentences in the Sun on page 21, for example, and just a little more in the Daily Mirror on page 20. In the Daily Express itself you might easily have failed to spot the apology that was part of the settlement, as the two paragraphs in the top corner of page five were a little lost beside the bold headline blaring out across the rest of the spread: "Let the jobless lag lofts, says Brown". The Tapas Seven victory, it seems, was treated as a minor footnote to a burned-out story; few people were likely to be interested.

Well, they ought to be interested, because the McCann case was the greatest scandal in our news media in at least a decade - an outrage far worse than the Andrew Gilligan "sexed-up dossier" affair of 2003 - and those responsible are now slinking away almost unpunished. They are escaping, moreover, by the most shameful of means. The editors and proprietors of the papers responsible for the great balloon of speculative nonsense that was the McCann story had the power to kill off discussion of what went wrong in the press, and they used it. When their balloon burst, they simply began pretending it had never existed.

Not one editor and, so far as I know, not one reporter has lost his or her job or even faced formal reprimand as a result of the McCann coverage. There has been no serious inquest in the industry and no organised attempt to establish what went wrong, while no measures have been taken to prevent a repetition. Where there have been consequences, as with the Tapas Seven, they have come from outside and been reported to the public with the most grudging economy.

I'll fund the McCanns until they find Madeleine vows Brian Kennedy

The multi-millionaire tycoon financing Kate and Gerry McCann's search for their daughter has said he will support them for the rest of his life if necessary.

Double-glazing magnate Brian Kennedy, 48, said he would use his estimated £450million fortune to back the couple as long as Madeleine remained missing.

His pledge will alleviate concerns about what will happen when Madeleine's Fund, made up largely of public donations, runs out. There is currently less than £500,000 in the kitty, with £1million having already been spent on the hunt for Madeleine since her disappearance in May last year.

Team McCann is now hiring a fifth group of private investigators to help with the search.

Mr Kennedy, who has five children with his wife Christine, lives in Wilmslow, Cheshire, and made his money through double-glazing firm Everest. He had not met the McCanns before offering his help but now speaks to them almost daily.

A source said: ‘Mr Kennedy got involved after seeing Kate on television after she became an arguido. He felt compelled to do something. A fifth company is going to be hired.

'Everything that can be done is being done. But it is like looking for a grain of sand on a sea shore. The team are just desperate for leads now.’

The couple's lawyers are still sifting through 13,000 pages of Portuguese police files, released last month. One team of investigators believed they had found Madeleine in Morocco last year – but it turned out to be an American girl being kept against her will in a dispute between her parents.

‘It was desperately disappointing when it turned out not to be Madeleine,’ said a source. ‘It was a low point for everyone concerned.’

Madeleine’s Fund is already paying investigators Metodo 3, Control Risks, Oakley International and an unnamed fourth company.

Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns' spokesman, said: ‘We will leave no stone unturned in finding Madeleine.’

Provide your information to the investigation

It is over 3 weeks since we learned that the Portuguese authorities had closed the investigation to find Madeleine, lifted our arguido status and ended judicial secrecy. We were surprised that copies of investigation files were given to the media. The content of these files has been extensively reported. It will be clear to everyone now, that there is absolutely no evidence that suggests Madeleine has been seriously harmed. Knowing this, we strongly believe that Madeleine is out there and can be found.

Of course whoever is responsible for Madeleine’s abduction must, and can be, found to prevent them from putting another child and family through the misery we have suffered. We have always believed that this heinous crime could be solved with the help of the public.

Our investigators continue to explore credible leads and will continue to do so as long as Madeleine is missing. Now that the authorities are no longer looking for Madeleine we implore everyone who has provided information to the enquiry to contact us at investigation@findmadeleine.com or on + 44 (0)845 838 4699. We will guarantee that all information will be treated in the strictest confidence. You can help us find Madeleine.

Madeleine's parents hire former CIA & FBI agents

It's not Madeleine

A possible sighting of Madeleine McCann in Belgium has been ruled out, the Belgian authorities said today.

The father of a young blonde girl captured on CCTV in Brussels on August 4 came forward last night to explain that his daughter was not the missing girl.

Lieve Pellens, spokeswoman for the Belgian federal prosecutor's office, said: "He saw this picture and obviously for him it was very easy recognising the girl accompanied by a woman in a veil.

"It's her nanny - she is a young Moroccan woman who is qualified to look after children and works in a care centre."

The news will be a blow to Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, who had hoped the Brussels sighting would provide the breakthrough they have been awaiting for more than 15 months.

First tests results for CCTV footage

A police source said yesterday that the first tests carried out by biometrics experts on the CCTV footage had placed the girl at five years old. And the source said the child’s face also corresponded with Madeleine’s hair and face shape. Lab experts believe the woman was around four months pregnant.

Can we go back now? Bank CCTV

Could it be Madeleine?

A LITTLE girl who cops suspect could be Madeleine McCann asked a woman she was seen walking with, “Can we go back now?” it emerged last night.

The poignant plea in English was overheard by a bank security guard in Brussels, Belgium — and he is convinced the kiddie was missing Maddie.

The Securitas guard became suspicious and ran out of the KBC bank branch last Monday after spotting the pair on monitors linked to CCTV cameras covering the street.

Tapes were last night being studied by police — and footage obtained by The Sun has been passed to Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry to see if they recognise the child.

The guard told detectives the blonde blue-eyed girl looked just like Maddie, who was nearly four when she vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Portugal on May 3 last year.

She was with a woman the man did not believe was her mother because they were very unalike.
He heard the girl say: “Can we go back now?”

Visit The Sun to watch the footage.

THE WOMAN captured on CCTV in Belgium a week ago with a young girl resembling Madeleine McCann has failed to come forward despite appeals.

INVESTIGATION BLUNDERS

These are the photo fits of two suspects that were seen acting suspiciously in the days before Madeleine's abduction. Portuguese police never released them. They only circulated a picture which was described as nothing more than an "egg with hair". Why did they hide these photo fits?

The PJ worked with an enormous margin of error and they achieved very little in terms of conclusive results, especially with regards to the fate of Madeleine.

Other revelations about the Police 'effort' so far include:

Undisclosed information about a little girl talking to a shop keeper in Amsterdam. The little girl said her name was Maddie and asked where her Mummy was. Last night private detectives working for the McCanns were preparing to head to Amsterdam to follow up the lead. And a family spokesman said: “If it was Madeleine, it was a disgrace that it was not passed on. We need to know what happened with this.”

CCTV photocopy of Repsol petrol station on 4 May 2007 (day after Maddy disappeared) where a child matching Madeleine's description was spotted. Police have written "negativo" on it showing it wasn't Madeleine however Kate & Gerry were never shown the footage. It is not clear whether or not Police followed up this sighting. If they didn't, Madeleine's family deserve to know why.

Was this Madeleine?? Why did they withhold this footage??

Kate McCann sent an emotional letter to Paulo Rebelo, the detective who took over the Madeleine McCann investigation in October last year.
"Madeleine is the most precious thing in our life. As her mother, the pain and anxiety I feel for her is indescribable and the feeling of helplessness overwhelming."
Cruelly, this letter was never replied to.

The McCanns must be incredibly angry and frustrated by what has been revealed in recent days.

Portuguese police named them suspects after a British forensic expert told investigators in the Algarve that there was no DNA evidence .

Detectives lied to Gerry and said his daughter’s DNA had definitely been found in the family’s hire car.

It was time wasted that could have been spent looking for Madeleine.

The blunders are likely to have a lasting impact on them - and leave them questioning further if something different could have been done.

One can only hope that somewhere within these files lies the answer to finding their beautiful daughter.

MIS-USING MADELEINE'S NAME

Madeleine McCann’s parents have urged people not to give money to a group called the Madeleine Foundation.

The Foundation, which has a £10 annual membership fee, is led by Anthony Bennett, 60, who failed with a private prosecution against Kate and Gerry McCann for child neglect.

He is telling people he intends to bring another private prosecution.

Last year Bennett tried unsuccessfully to launch a private prosecution against the McCanns, only to be told by magistrates in Leicester that they had no jurisdiction over the case, because Madeleine disappeared in Portugal.

Madeleine’s parents fear members of the public will inadvertently donate money to it because they may mistake it for the McCanns’ own Madeleine Fund, which pays for private investigations into her whereabouts.

The McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Kate and Gerry would warn people not to give any money to this foundation. It is mis-using Madeleine’s name.”

Kate and Gerry McCann were awaiting official confirmation of the decision and insisted that they would “never give up searching” for their daughter who vanished last May from the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz.

"Madeleine is still missing. It's a year down the line, Madeleine is still missing," Kate McCann told AP.

BBC Interview

The parents of missing girl Madeleine McCann have made fresh appeals for information in the run up to the first anniversary of her disappearance.

Gerry McCann said they had always hoped they "would not get to this stage".

His wife said the key message was that Madeleine was still missing, she had been the victim of a "horrific crime" and the perpetrator was "out there".

They told the BBC they kept hope alive because Madeleine was "so important" to them that they would never give up.

"We need that key bit of information... then this could all be over," said Kate McCann.

A YEAR ago this weekend, an ordinary middle class family from Leicestershire flew to Portugal for an early break in the sun. Six days into that holiday, their lives were torn apart by an event that would dominate much of the world's news for months.

The disappearance of Madeleine McCann started as a dramatic international hunt for a lost child. But within days attention focused as much on the reasons for her loss as on where she could have gone.

And as the weeks became months, without any sign of the four-year-old, it became a saga of recriminations and counter-recriminations involving Madeleine's parents, Gerry and Kate, the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) and an apparently insatiable press in Portugal and Britain.
The internet spawned a myriad of lurid conspiracies. Rarely in recent history has a single event or crime dominated so many headlines, or so many conversations at school gates, in pubs and at dinner parties. Theory was piled upon theory, and opinion became a currency equal to fact, as the boundaries of common sense and taste were stretched. With the benefit of distance from the febrile days of last summer, it is clear the McCanns' advisers, the police and the media all made mistakes.

Meanwhile, one year on, we are no nearer knowing what happened to the little girl with the ready smile and distinctive right eye. Hers is a tragedy that few, if any, of us will ever be able to truly understand. All we can do is sympathise. SCOTSMAN.COM

Madeleine, One Year On: Campaign for Change (TV Documentary)
As the anniversary of the disappearance of Madeleine approaches, this special one-off documentary focuses on Kate and Gerry's campaign to prevent other families going through a similar ordeal. It is the only TV programme the McCanns agreed to be filmed in and it follows their quest to introduce an Amber Alert system in Europe, which gives police the power to go on TV and radio when a child goes missing.
Following the couple since January, it documents them from their home in Rothley to Brussels and Washington as they launch their campaign. They talk about the night she went missing, how their lives have been affected, their treatment as 'Arguido' suspects and their hope that this system will reduce the chances of this happening to other families.

Daily Star - Front Page Apology

The Daily Star today makes a wholehearted apology to Kate and Gerry McCann for stories suggesting the couple were responsible for, or may be responsible for, the death of their daughter Madeleine and for covering it up.
We now recognise that such a suggestion is absolutely untrue and that Kate and Gerry are completely innocent of any involvement in their daughter's disappearance.

As an expression of our regret we have now made a substantial donation to the Madeleine Fund in the hope that it helps efforts to find her.

We sincerely apologise for any additional distress we have caused the family.

Daily Express - Front Page Apology

The Daily Express today takes the unprecedented step of making a front-page apology to Kate and Gerry McCann.

We do so because we accept that a number of articles in the newspaper have suggested that the couple caused the death of their missing daughter Madeleine and then covered it up.

We acknowledge that there is no evidence whatsoever to support this theory and that Kate and Gerry are completely innocent of any involvement in their daughter's disappearance.

We trust that the suspicion that has clouded their lives for many months will soon be lifted.

As an expression of its regret, the Daily Express has now paid a very substantial sum into the Madeleine Fund and we promise to do all in our power to help efforts to find her.

Kate and Gerry, we are truly sorry to have added to your distress.

We assure you that we hope Madeleine will one day be found alive and well and will be restored to her loving family.

Madeleine's parents to offer money for Shannon Matthews poster campaign

The parents of Maddie McCann yesterday pledged cash to boost the hunt for Shannon.

Gerry and Kate, whose daughter has been missing for 10 months, are "deeply concerned" at the plight of Shannon's family.

Kate, 39, said: "My heart goes out to them. We always hoped and prayed that no other family would have to suffer like we have."

Money from the Find Madeleine Fund could perhaps pay for a massive poster campaign.

Shannon's mum Karen will contact the McCanns to discuss the possibilities. She said: "It's fantastic that they are offering to help us in this way."

Board members of the Maddie fund will now be asked to approve donations to Karen.

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Kate and Gerry have no control over the money. The board will want to know what it is needed for."

The fund now stands at £544,000. That is less than half the amount it contained soon after Maddie, then three, vanished in Portugal on May 3 last year.

Search for Madeleine to restart at dam

The Arade dam’s water tower from where
divers will begin the search next week. Photo: SOLARPIX

DIVING OPERATIONS to search for Madeleine McCann’s body in the Arade dam, near Silves, will restart on Monday, March 10. The operation is being financially supported by Sociedade Portuguesa de Engenharia e Construção, Lda (SPEC), the Portuguese engineering and construction society.
SPEC considered the leads received by the Madeira-based lawyer, Marcos Aragão Pereira, credible and the initiative “a noble act in the defence of children”. Mr Aragão, who commissioned the first phase of the dam searches in January and February, is also organising next week’s operation.

The diving team will this time consist of seven divers, five from Lagos and two from Portimão. Search operations will again be directed by Martin Falkous, from Dive Time, the diving company based in Lagos that was also involved in the first phase of the Arade dam searches.

The search will start near the dam’s control tower and divers will be widening their search of the Arade lake from the water tower in the direction of the flood gate. The dam’s maximum depth is 46 metres and on May 3, when Madeleine went missing, it had a depth of 40 metres, based on Mr Aragão’s official records.

Marcos Aragão said: “The Madeleine Fund is not supporting the diving operation because it has limited resources and, as the family believes Madeleine is alive, they will keep on supporting leads that may take them to their living daughter.”

Metodo 3, the Barcelona-based private investigation company hired by the McCanns, is aware of the operation in the Arade dam “as it was aware of the one held in January”, Mr Aragão told The Resident, “We cross check information with them. The tip-off I received has been confirmed with information from Metodo 3.”

He gave the example of a “truck driver who, on May 5, witnessed a woman in Silves transferring a child wrapped up in a blanket from her car to another vehicle driven by a man showing an aggressive behaviour.”
Mr Aragão refused to reveal further details on the leads he is pursuing, explaining that “the information will be revealed in due time as it is not safe to release it at this moment.”

As in previous instances, the police teams investigating the Madeleine McCann case were informed about next week’s search operation, however, “the police have not shown much interest”, said Marcos Aragão.

McCanns set to keep using Metodo 3

The McCanns will keep using Spanish private eyes Metodo 3, as the first anniversary of their daughter Madeleine's disappearance approaches.

The Find Madeleine Fund yesterday voted to retain their services after the firm's six-month contract expires next week.

There were suggestions that the agency would be axed following wild claims by company boss Francisco Marco that the missing four-year-old would be found by Christmas.
But family spokesman Clarence Mitchell called it "water under the bridge".

He added that Metodo 3 - said to be earning up to £50,000 a month - "retain a commitment and passion to finding Madeleine".

'I AM ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE THIS WAS HER' - Melissa Fiering

Student still 'convinced' it's her. SOURCE: THE MIRROR

Melissa Fiering, 18, described the dark-skinned male to sketch artist Emre Altin, 28, exclusively for the Mirror.

Speaking at her home in Nijmegen, Holland, yesterday, the travel and tourism student said of the police-style e-fit:

"This is definitely an accurate likeness of the man I saw. I'd recognise him straight away if the police found him."

Melissa said the person she saw in Montpellier, southern France, was about 6ft, in his late 30s, possibly Algerian, with slightly receding hair and a distinctive sharp jaw line. He wore a black leather jacket and "looked quite rough".

Reacting angrily to reports from France that the latest sighting of Madeleine should not be taken seriously, Melissa added:

"I am absolutely positive this was her. I would not make these kind of statements to draw attention to myself.

I have not been able to think about anything else since. I was upset by this story so I would not do this to create confusion. I feel very sorry for Madeleine's parents."

According to Melissa, the girl she and a friend saw last Friday night had the same flaw as Madeleine in the iris of her right eye and looked up when she called out the missing child's name.

The man took the girl out of the premises. The authorities have not contacted Melissa since she viewed CCTV footage filmed in the restaurant.

How common is Madeleine's eye defect?

A girl resembling Madeleine McCann has been spotted in France by a woman who says she had the same eye blemish as the missing girl's. Police have dismissed the sighting, but how common is the defect?

Referred to as the "mark of Madeleine" the blemish on the four-year-old's right eye has played a key part in the campaign to highlight her disappearance, emphasised in posters and videos.

It's not the first reported sighting of Madeleine, but a spokesman for the McCann family said it was "more worthy than most" because of the eye defect.

The blemish is called a coloboma of the iris. Its precise incidence is not recorded in the UK, although it is no more common than 0.007% per head of population.

While French police have ruled out the latest "sighting" of Madeleine, given the rareness of the eye defect it's perhaps not surprising Ms Fiering believed she had seen the missing girl.

"I looked in her eye because I'd seen on TV that Madeleine's got a defect in her right iris and I saw this girl had it," she told the Daily Mirror. "I could hardly believe my eyes, but I knew for sure it was her."

Almost certain it's not Madeleine

The parents of Madeleine McCann were facing further heartache today when it emerged that CCTV footage of a little girl playing in the south of France is 'almost certainly not her.'

Melissa Firing, 18, said the child was with a 'tall, swarthy' man who bundled her away in a car. But French detectives have already spent hours pouring over the footage at the Criminal Research Institute in Rosny-sur-Bois, just north of Paris - and their initial verdict is that it is not Madeleine.

Portugal's justice minister says Madeleine's case is coming to its end

Madeleine Cops Set To 'Shut The Case'

The police probe into the disappearance of British four-year-old Madeleine McCann is nearing its end, Portugal's justice minister has revealed.

Alberto Costa told a parliamentary committee: "We are at a stage now where we are approaching the conclusion of the process."
It is now 286 days since four-year-old Madeleine vanished from her family's holiday apartment in the Algarve seaside resort of Praia da Luz, while her parents dined with friends nearby.
Sky News' Crime correspondent Martin Brunt said: "I find it extraordinary that after less than a year they are considering winding up the case. You would have thought there was much more to explore.

"It gives substance to the long-held belief that the Portuguese police had very few clues to go on all along.
"This basically means that no official Portuguese police detectives will actively work on the case any more - but, if a significant new piece of evidence was discovered, they would have to react to it."
Brunt added: "What does it mean to (Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry) the McCanns? It could either mean they are released from their arguido (suspect) status at last or the cloud of suspicion could remain over them forever."

Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for the McCanns, said the only satisfactory conclusion would be Madeleine being found.
He said: "If the case is coming to a conclusion, we hope it will conclude shortly with the finding of Madeleine and her being reunited with her parents.
"That is the only satisfactory conclusion for us."

Criminologist Mark Williams-Thomas told Sky News Online: "If Madeleine is not found and they are closing the case, I have to ask the question, 'Where is she?'
"The case must remain open until they find her or, at the very least, charge someone."

NEW LOOK WEBSITE LAUNCHED

A newly designed web site for the Help to Find Madeleine Campaign has recently been launched.

The purpose of the new site is to focus attention on the primary goal which remains to Find Madeleine McCann. The fund have been working hard to design the site to make it more user friendly and easier to keep up to date. It is hoped that the new site will allow people to find what they are looking for quickly. The new site still allows Gerry to update his blog, but it also has the additional facility to allow authorised persons to issue News Items without the need for the Web team to write the code for the pages.

MESSAGE FROM GERRY & KATE

Our daughter Madeleine was abducted on 3rd May 2007 in Praia da Luz, Portugal, 9 days before her 4th birthday. She was taken from our holiday apartment where she was sleeping with her younger brother and sister whilst we were dining 50 yards away. Despite a massive investigation led by the Portuguese police and supported by the British police, we still do not know who has taken her, why she was taken or where she is. In addition, private investigators based in Spain are now following up any leads regarding Madeleine’s disappearance. (Investigation page)

Since Madeleine’s abduction, we have learned a lot about missing children and child exploitation. The scale of the problem is massive and worldwide. Although finding Madeleine will always remain our priority, we feel it is our duty to highlight these problems as well as areas where legislation can be improved, in order to make the world a little safer for all children. To achieve these aims we are working closely with the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Centre for Child Exploitation and Online Protection and other non-governmental agencies throughout Europe (Investigation page).
The Find Madeleine Campaign launched a new YouTube channel for missing children in August 2007 called ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ in conjunction with ICMEC and Google.

The support we have had from around the world has been amazing. We have no doubt that without all the good wishes, prayers and efforts of so many people, our ordeal would have been so much harder. It has helped maintain our strength and hope, and this together with support for the campaign, has helped the search for our precious Madeleine. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their unconditional support and solidarity.

Madeleine is a beautiful little person. She was a very happy and much loved little girl. We believe there is a very good chance that Madeleine is still alive. She deserves the love and security of her family. She needs to be back home with her mummy and daddy, brother and sister.

Please keep Madeleine in your thoughts and prayers. And please – remain vigilant.

We will NEVER give up looking for Madeleine.

Thank you again for your ongoing support and kindness.

PHOTO FIT UPDATE - MAN FOUND

The man in the image released by Kate and Gerry McCann as a possible suspect in Madeleine's disappearance has been found and is a local pig farmer who has now been ruled out of the case.

The man, who has been named as Joaquim Jose Marques, was discovered living five miles from the holiday resort in the Algarve but police say he is not connected to the case.

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "As far as we are concerned, the hunt for the man in the sketch continues.

"We are very grateful to anyone who comes forward with information. Even if it is not the man we are looking for, it allows us to rule individuals out.

"We have a strong presence around Praia da Luz and we continue to urge anyone who thinks they have seen this man to make contact as a priority."
